The Empty Bottle
Web design and web development for a music venue.
The Empty Bottle is the tough, blackened heart of the Chicago music scene. In 1992 the music venue opened out as a cat-ridden hole-in-the-wall just south of Wicker Park where you could get any beer for buck-fifty or less, play pool for 50 cents, and see the most exciting indie bands play as they passed through the city. In 2002 the Bottle was down to one cat, and we designed and built them their first website.
Fast forward 10 years and the Bottle was still using our original website, but it was time for a rebirth. Let’s face it: it’s finally 2012, the place was catless, Empty Bottle Presents books most of the venues in the city, and the populace cried out for a modern calendar site to serve their show-going needs. So we designed and built a site on the principle of user viewing patterns that helped the Bottle display the max amount of show info within a speed-read structure. We ripped down the walls of the classic seven-across calendar view – a view that typically limits size and amount of content for each listing – instead putting the navigation onus on the date name. This opened up space for photos, text and links (pulled in from TicketWeb), and a lets the Bottle create multiple listings for events occuring on the same night.
